Find duplicate videos, even if they have different names, different sizes or were re-encoded. DupFinder doesn’t compare file names or sizes, it compares the content of the videos themselves.

What DupFinder can do

  • Compares the content using so-called perceptual hashes of individual frames
  • Spots copies in other containers, other resolutions or re-encoded versions
  • Runs in your browser with a local interface and keyboard shortcuts
  • No risk: deleted files go to the recycle bin
  • One EXE, FFmpeg does the work in the background

Security and code signing

Every release is built automatically by GitHub Actions straight from the public source code, never on a private PC. Free code signing through the SignPath Foundation has been applied for. Until it is active, Windows SmartScreen may warn on first start: “More info” > “Run anyway”. What gets signed, who approves it and what the program sends over the network: see the code signing policy.

FAQ

Does DupFinder find videos with a different name or resolution?

Yes, that’s exactly what it’s built for. DupFinder doesn’t look at file names or sizes, it takes individual frames from the video and compares what’s in them. That way it also finds copies that were renamed, scaled to another resolution, packed into another container or re-encoded.

Does DupFinder just delete files?

No. You see the duplicates it found in the interface and decide yourself what goes. And even then the file goes to the recycle bin first, so you can always get it back.

Do my videos get uploaded anywhere?

No. DupFinder runs completely on your PC. The interface does open in your browser, but only locally on your own machine. Your videos never leave your PC. DupFinder only goes online on first start, to fetch FFmpeg from GitHub if there isn’t one next to the EXE yet. Details are in the Code signing policy.

Can I use DupFinder at work?

Yes, DupFinder is free for everyone, at work too. It’s open source under the GPLv3, the source code is on GitHub.

Where can I get help?

For bugs or questions about DupFinder, please open an issue on GitHub: github.com/burnersen/DupFinder/issues. That way others can see the answer too, and I can track down problems fastest. Before you do, have a quick look at the README on GitHub, a lot of questions are already answered there.
